When GTA III was released for the PC in May of 2002, it was plagued with lots of problems. Crashes could happen in lots of scenarios and there was controversy over the system requirements not being right.

The first few days passed and the only message board posts that appeared over at, then known as, were error-related or gameplay questions. People played the game constantly. Some, though, decided to take a look "under the hood" of the game.

Skins were the first mods made for the game. A skin is basically what textures the model of the character you play as in the game. A few I (Jordan) personally recall are a Ronald McDonald skin, a Michael Myers skin, and an Adidas skin.

After that, tools were being made to edit almost every file that had modding potential. After a few months time, skinning, modeling, texturing, and re-coding GTA III were all possible. You could replace a car in GTA III with one of your own. You could turn a boring looking building into a real-life hotel. You could make your own missions. Almost anything was possible.

Then, months later, arguably the best mod for GTA III was released: RealGTA3. It replaced a ton of cars, added the Statue of Liberty, weapons, pedestrians, buildings, and so much more. Nine months of work went into the mod:

Small mods that were made for GTA III early on are preserved in a mod pack hosted by PlanetGrandTheftAuto. Over 108 mods are included with the mods package. You can download all of them in one .zip file (20 MB) by clicking here.
